Small homes with semi-rural ambience, usually entry-level.  Look here if you want a pleasant semi-rural area with great schools.

Boundaries:  Alpine Road, San Francisquito Creek, Junipero Serra.  Map boundaries are approximate due to my limitations as a map maker.  Neighborhood boundaries may be subjective.  Boundaries and other information on this site should be verified before being relied upon.

Overview:  An often-engaging hodgepodge of houses located on a narrow strip of land between Alpine and the creek.  Homes close to Alpine get plenty of traffic noise but toward the creek it’s quiet and beautiful and the birds sing and your neighbor is Stanford Golf Course.  Originally a tract of summer cabins named Stanford Week End Acres.

 NOTE:  This area is governed directly by San Mateo County, not the City of Menlo Park.  Menlo Park’s police and public works services are not available to Alpine residents.  Contact the Menlo Park City Clerk’s office at (650) 858-3380 for city services that may be available to Alpine residents for a non-resident fee, such as library and recreation programs.  If you think you might be remodeling or expanding your home, contact the County Planning & Building Division at (650) 363-4161 for guidelines before you buy.

 Housing stock:  This area is nothing if eclectic with its small ’20s cabins, modest ’50s and ’60s ranchers and a smattering of larger homes from the ’80s done in a sort of rustic Tahoe style.  Sometimes you’ll find all of them on the same street.

 Lot sizes:  Most are 7000 sq.ft. or under.  Many ranchers are on rather small lots of 5000 sq.ft. or less.  There are a handful of quarter and half acres.

 Affordability:  Affordability is fair to good for Menlo Park but much depends on lot size and location.  Nearer to the creek is pricier because it’s prettier and further from Alpine Road traffic noise.

 Affordability for this area is hard to pin down because of the tremendous diversity of housing types (see Housing stock, below) and locations (is it next to one of the few creeks in this area still in its natural state or next to a busy road?).

 Schools:  K-8 district:  Las Lomitas, 1011 Altschul Ave., Menlo Park CA 94025.  Administration Office-Superintendent (650) 854-2880.  School evaluations.

 9-12 district:  Sequoia Union High School District, 480 James Ave., Redwood City 94062.  Administration (650) 369-1411.  Boundary search.  School evaluations.

 This information is based on district and other sources but may be obsolete by the time you read this.  Verify district boundaries and school availability with district offices. 

 Amenities:  None in immediate area except the Alpine bike path.  There are open space preserves nearby at Stanford, Palo Alto, Arastradero and Windy Hill.  Convenient to two private swim and tennis clubs, Alpine Hills and Ladera Oaks.

 Shopping:  Sharon Heights Shopping Center, Sharon Park Drive (see Sharon Heights); Webb Ranch produce; Ladera County Shopper (see Ladera).

 Neighborhoods with similar ambience:  An area that’s hard to categorize.  Other former summer cabin areas include Los Trancos Woods in unincorporated Portola Valley, the Russell-Santa Maria area in the town of Portola Valley and Woodside Glens in Woodside.  Also similar are parts of Emerald Hills and Palomar Park in unincorporated Redwood City and Devonshire Canyon in unincorporated San Carlos.  Alpine tract neighborhoods resemble Menlo Park County neighborhoods.
